I love oregon: BURGERVILLE (shake, halibut sandwich and fried asparagus)

Another AWESOME thing about Oregon is BURGERVILLE, which is a local chain in the northwest. They make burgers mostly, but really focus on a philosophy of using fresh, local, and sustainable ingredients and cooking practices. They have seasonal offerings as well.  We got the strawberry shake and asparagus fries (which were CRAZY GOOD) with garlic aioli.  I also got a halibut sandwich, which is REAL fish with actual flakes!  This is in a fastfood burger joint!

I love oregon series: OTTO'S SAUSAGE KITCHEN

Next we went to OTTO'S SAUSAGE, which apparently has one of the top 10 hot dogs in the country. They smoke and make their own meats and sausages. We split a sausage and a sandwhich- the "kitchen sink".  they were both pretty good but the sausage was unreal. as in, unreally good!  my only complaint was that it wasn't big enough! i wanted more!

Anyways, a good stop if you're in portland- near Reed College. Also, apparently its about to be featured on Diners, Dives and Drive-Ins on the food network.

i love portland mini-series: Voodoo Doughnuts!

First stop after the airport was well, using MAX (I'll get to that)- but then we went to VOODOO DOUGHNUTS which has been featured on lots of TV shows (I saw it on "No Reservations") and was recommended to me by a few folks. They basically make crazy doughnuts. Like, crazy.

We ordered a Bacon Maple (guess who ate that one), a McMinnville Creme (strangely named after my wife's hometown- there's only one other named after a city - portland), and a Bloodfilled Voodoo  Doughnut for a friend. The Bacon Maple was seriously good. Doughnuts weren't super fresh, but tasted good. Very, very sugary.  They have other ones too, ones topped with cereal, a huge huge huge one called a Tex-A$$, and more inappropriate but tasty creations. It's right next to a stumptown coffee too, but we didn't have time to check that out.  Oh well- there's always next time! (I've had stumptown, its amazing). Oh- they do weddings there too.  Seriously. Legal and non-legal ones.

"I LOVE PORTLAND" Series

Just got back from a friday to monday trip up to portland / mcminnville. we went up to see my sister in law's ordination/commissioning as a missionary servant to el salvador (and latin american in general) w/ the american baptists, and my other sister in law's baptism.

This week and maybe next I'm going to post a series of posts about the weekend (many or most of them are food related) detailing some of the great things about Oregon and Portland.

This is done in honor of my dear friend JR, who deep down really does love portland // oregon, but masks it in a very funny and witty disdain... you know its sort of a weird passive//aggressive american beauty thing. ;)

Stay tuned...

CA: Bagel, Egg, Avacado, Cheddar, and salami sandwich.

One of my favorite things is a runny egg on these... just becomes like a messy, sticky sauce!

Soccer! FC GOLD PRIDE v Sky Blue FC

Yesterday I went to the FC Gold Pride, the new women's pro soccer team in San Jose's game vs Sky Blue FC (which is amazingly NY's team. Sky blue??). i went with my wife and some friends who invited us to come!

it was a great game! women's soccer and sports in general doesn't get the credit it deserved. there were 3 amazing saves, 2 balls off the post and some really sharp passing.

i got some pics, especially of two of the "characters" of the league- FC Gold Pride's Eriko with the huge fro from Japan, and Sky Blue's Natasha Kai- from hawaii and who is tatted up more than a lot of NBA players. Also, a pleasant surprise was to see Albertin Montoya coaching. He went to Los Altos HS with me- he was the same year as my brother. I worked with him one year at a summer camp. He was an incredible soccer player. Man- i regret not playing soccer when i was young ("i could have been somebody!")

Great game, hope to go out again.

check out some pictures i took its also on my flickr- http://www.flickr.com/stevejohman

CA: My Wife's Snickerdoodles (THE BEST!)

I've been nasty sick all week (no, not swine flu). My wife, who is amazing, cooked me up my favorite cookies in the whole world to cheer me up one night. SNICKERDOODLES. I love em. and hers are seriously the best. Just crispy on the edges and chewy and moist in the middle. Amazing. Plus, and i mean this, they are made with love, which seriously makes food so much better. I really believe that when food is made out of expression of service and love- when its self-giving, that's what makes food more than just survival.
