Monday Afternoon Diversion: Moments - Chicagoist

We know we usually keep it goofy with our diversions, but sometimes even we need something more...life affirming. Take, for example, this beautiful four minute short film from WNYC's Radiolab, directed by Will Hoffman and featuring the music of Icelandic band Parachutes (pals of Sigur Ros).

this is from Radiolab, a great podcast from NPR's NYC station. a great little 4 min film on the moments of life. Hat Tip -Kristen!

Status Updates Since My Mother Became My Facebook Friend.

BY SCOTT A. HARRIS

- - - -

Scott is making good, well informed decisions.

Scott is going to bed at a very reasonable hour.

Scott is drinking only on occasion, and even then it's just one or two.

Scott quit smoking several months ago without any apparent difficulty.

Scott is in no way involved, currently nor in the past, with a married woman, regardless of what anyone is saying.

Scott is making large, regular contributions to his savings account.

Scott is making yet another home cooked meal, avoiding fast food as usual.

Scott is no longer in debt like he used to be...boy that would be terrible.

Scott is in no way affected by the current economic downturn...everything is a-okay.

Scott is not gaining weight, and his clothes fit just fine.

Luckily, I don't think my mom is joining FB anytime soon.

CA: Braised and Browned Lamb with Peaches, Cinnamon and Cayanne

on a trip to visit a friend in seattle, we had a cooking day. we got some lamb shoulder and made braised lamb with peaches, cinnamon and cayenne, a little lemon and parsley and onion. really good dish- kind of a nice balance of the strong lamb flavor with the sweet peaches and a little heat. honestly when i was making this i was pretty skeptical. made the mistake of trying to butcher myself- those lamb bones are tricky. the recipe had you braise, then brown after cooking off most the liquid. strange, but it worked. the peaces and lamb were a great combo though and it was surprisingly tender... fall off the fork tender!

this one is a keeper!

Barca - Sounders. Messi is a boy wonder among ants.

Messi has 2 goals in the first half. Seattle is a great host. The sounders marketing team are geniuses. Soccer can't make it in the USA? Uh 70000 people here prove that wrong.

Why Regulation Failed-This American Life: The Watchman

been listening to this tonight- heard part of it earlier- gets at how the regulators who were supposed to watch out for AIG missed it. Gets at the systemic problems which caused AIG to be regulated by a weak agency, how Rating agencies like standard's and poors missed the boat. crazy.

CA: Chicken, Shrimp, + Kielbasa GUMBO!

CA_Chicken_Shrimp_Kielbasa_GUM.zip (1191 KB)

Some Friends over tonight for gumbo. Kind of winged it off of a few different recipes. Making the roux was interesting- all the "authentic" recipes called for oil and flour so i used that. i think some butter would have been richer. Not sure if i got the roux right, but i pulled it before it got too dark. The main book i used called for a brown "between milk and dark chocolate" or "an old copper penny." I think i got it close anyway, but i'd like to meet a real creole chef to tell me how they do it. there are recipes that have you bake it- more exact and predictable.

It was also making a shrimp stock. never done that before...

Anyways, Gumbo is good stuff. Rich, comforty, lots of flavors- and the nice heat burn at the end. Again, i liked this, but would have put more butter in in next time- i know that's a restaurant trick.

Anyone else made Gumbo before? any tips on the roux? i'm doing this again for sure!

Made the America's Test Kitchen version of the Sullivan St. Bakery's No Knead Bread 2.0. Adds some beer and vinegar to the dough.

Then had it with some leftover smoked meats and brie, some peach jelly our friends made, and also of course- my favorite breakfast- eggs with bacon, cheese, hot sauce and tomatoe.

Club America V. Inter Milan @ Stanford Stadium

Last sunday I was fortunate to have been able to go see Inter Milan (featuring Zlaton, Viera, Chivu, Cambiasso, and the infamous head-butt target of Zidane, Mazzeratti) play Club America.

It was a blast. The Club American fans were amazing (as you can see in these pictures). I wish i had sat in their section. CA outplayed Inter, but had several missed goal scoring opportunities. They played to a 1-1 tie, and then Club America won on penalties.

We also took caltrain, which rocked because traffic is a nightmare at stanford. Stanford is not built for large crowds. It was awesome though, they had University Ave be all one way. and for the pedestrian crossing, we had the whole intersection of Embarcadero and El Camino, two very large streets.

Fun Stuff. In two weeks my and a friend will see Barcalona play. Gotta love preseason tours.
